Drawing on court files and interview data from a sample of families who came to the Los Angeles Conciliation Court in 1983 with a custody dispute, this research study provides information on the initial custody orders filed at the time of the divorce, the custody behaviors within the families six years after the dissolution was filed, and the relationship between the order and the behavior.

Summarizes the extant knowledge concerning the developmental consequences of post-divorce custody arrangements for young children. Also based on interviews with court personnel, research of scholarly and professional literature, and a meta-analysis of 12 studies reported in that literature.
