Q: What is the Administrative Office of the Courts?

A: The Administrative Office of the Courts, or AOC, under the supervision of the Administrative Director of the Courts, carries out the Judicial Council's official actions (see What Is the Judicial Council of California? under Policy Setting for the Courts). The AOC and the office of the Administrative Director of the Courts were established in 1962 pursuant to a 1960 constitutional amendment. Prior to that, the Judicial Council functioned without a formal staff structure, and work was performed by council members aided by the Supreme Court staff.
